The Career Day unveiled the hidden potential in Food Science and Technology students in UR-CAVM

By Christophe Habimana

The university of Rwanda; College of Agriculture, Animal Sciences and Veterinary Medicine (UR CAVM) under the sponsorship of Dot Rwanda has organized the career day as one of annual events of the college which was held on February 28, 2018.

It has been of a great delight to recognize that we are witnessing with our eyes the practical Rwandan versions of all what we find in the “Think big” of Carson, the “Rich Dad and Poor dad” of Kiyosaki and the “Think and grow rich” of Hill as they are one of the basics of our personal development.

We have nearby our sides, the classmates; the colleagues; those we share every single academic adventure, those we can call and consult without paying out any coin. The ones to inspire us through what we can livingly and tangibly see, understand and comprehend.

None else is being talked about, other than Young men in Food science and Technology, Year four (Class 2014-2018) who decided to set out with their area of expertise to make a name for themselves far from their homes, namely; LAMINA Group and JAC Group.

In the awarding ceremony of students participated in the career day, the first and the third prizes were won by Lamina Group and JAC Group respectively where the first ones got a check of Three hundred thousand Rwandan francs (300, 000 RWF) and the third ones got One hundred thousand Rwandan francs (100, 000 RWF).

And nothing else the novel endeavor of Lamina Group is all about other than processing and developing “Mashed Potato based waffles” branded INEZA waffles which are now one of the most liked and famous bakery food products in Byangabo area as well as soybean based products branded Ubuntu for JAC Group including usual Tofu, Tofu fortified with beetroots, soybean based doughnuts and soybean based Samosa which are the causing an ever-singing spirit of “Yummy” in the mouths of Byangabo people. It is from that credible reputation, these students from Year Four Food Science and Technology have been qualified enough for attending the career Day.

“We are food scientists and technologists by profession, regardless the income and revenue we currently have we want to do things which cannot only be limited in customer’s appraisal and acceptance. We want also to professionally work which will allow us to further understand and own the knowledge of what we are doing.” Said Mr. Emmanuel Mugwaneza, the CEO of Lamina Group.

There are not more than four months; due to the recent adjustments in UR colleges’ relocation “Food science and technology Department” was brought to Busogo campus. But, on spot, the gentlemen of the aforementioned companies noted the abundance of raw materials in the area, henceforth grasped the opportunity to turn circumstances into a profitable elbow grease.

“This prize we have won today is an irrefutable key indicator of the acceptance of what we make for the society. This motivating spirit is going to be the engine of our journey as days will be passing by.” Added Mr. Fabrice Rugira, one of the potential teammates of Lamina Group.

Nevertheless; both promising entrepreneurs are facing challenges among which are lack of adequate equipment and enough operating and working space. “The currently used equipment provide with a little efficiency since we are losing time per processing batch which slacks our production rate. We still need also an open space to work in, but we are now surely certain to quench our advancement’s thirsty sooner.” Says Jean Tuzaramyimana, the CEO and Co-founder of JAC Group.

Ultimately, there are students that are able now to prove the potentiality in the professionalism of what they pursue as University courses. They give hope to their mother nation and inspire their siblings in the same field as well as the related ones.
